This painting is a portrait of a friend. Almost every day, this Sulphur-crested Cockatoo visits my home, landing with a familiar clamor and a cheeky curiosity that I couldn't resist capturing on canvas.
In this piece, I wanted to balance the soft, delicate textures of his white feathers against the loud, energetic personality these birds are so famous for. I used a mix of structured brushwork for the cockatoo and more expressive, gestural marks in the background—using deep plums and warm ambers to evoke the feeling of the Australian bush at different times of day.
For me, this work is about more than just wildlife; it’s about the small, daily interactions we have with nature when we stop to look. It comes framed in a light timber floater frame, which I chose to keep the focus on the vibrant colors and the bird's inquisitive expression.
